"Goddess Ekajati, blue-black in colour, twelve faces, with the main face black. For the five right faces the first is white, second yellow, third green, fourth red, and fifth smoky-coloured. For the five left faces the first is red, second white, third yellow, fourth green, and fifth red-white. The upper face is smoky-coloured. With bared fangs and the brow gathered in a frown each face has three round red eyes. For the twenty-four hands the right hold a sword, vajra, wheel, jeweled throne, hook, arrow, spear, hammer, pestle, curved knife, hand-drum, and prayer beads. In the left are a bow, lasso, wrathful gesture, pennant, stick, trident, alcohol cup, lily, bell, axe, head of Brahma, and a skullcup. The single plait of brownish-yellow hair flows upward; adorned with five dry skulls, a necklace of fifty fresh heads, the six ornaments and snakes, terrifying with a radiant face and flickering tongue, fearsome and ugly, short with a distended belly, large raised breasts, wearing a tiger skin lower garment, the eight great snakes as ornaments, youthful and marvelous. 一髻佛母（Ekajati），来自于印度的本尊。为了搞清楚其复杂的仪轨体系，通常会通过功能，把她分成三类：

3、作为护法出现于仪轨的主尊或眷属
“Ekajati”这个单词，来自于梵文，由两个词根构成（eka表示“一”；Jati表示“辫子”）
（1） 作为冥想本尊，一髻佛母有多种仪轨形象，包括二臂、四臂、八臂、二十四臂十二面。
（2） 作为眷属，一髻佛母呈忿怒相，属于来自观音五十本尊仪轨之一。而在更早期的绿度母仪轨中，有这样的描述：“在绿度母三众仪轨中，圣光明佛母（摩利支天母）站在右边，寂忿相的一髻佛母站在左边”。
（3）一髻佛母，同样是非常重要的藏传佛教的护法之一，包括在旧译和新译派（包括萨迦、噶举、觉囊、格鲁）。
在宁玛派中，一髻佛母是一位非常重要的“伏藏”护法。她有许多仪轨示现，例如忿怒相站姿、黑色身、一面、二臂，伴随着她的最广为人知的外表——独眼、独牙、独乳，有时甚至以独脚出现（止贡噶举仪轨）。
在10世纪之后的新译派中，一髻佛母会以上述的所有三种形式出现，根据不同的仪轨传承，化现不同的外貌，并伴有不同的经文描述。
在萨迦派中，作为仁钦桑布传承的护法，一髻佛母亦作为烟碳天母（(Palden Lhamo Dudsolma)之母出现。
