《龙藏经》091-1，功德光祖师-Gunaprabha

Acarya Gunaprabha sits in a halFvajra posture on a cushion, dressed in monastic robes and a pandita hat. His right hand performs the gesture of argumentation (s. vitarka mudra) and in his left he holds a book. To his left is an ornamented table on which religious texts are placed, and underneath, Gunaprabha's name is inscribed in Tibetan, Behind the table
is a monk's staff (S. khakkhara) indicating Gunaprabha's status as a fully ordained monk. On his right are altar vessels, his alms bowl and monastic sieve.

seated above surrounded by clouds is Sakyamuni Buddha, flanked by Amitiyus (Left) and Amitbha (Right). At the bottom of the composition are the flaming eight-faceted jewel and an offering to the five senses, with vaisravana, the god of wealth (Left), and Yama Dharmaraja (Right). The
background of the appliqu depicts a beautiful summer landscape.

Gunaprabha was a disciple of Vasubandhu and his knowledge of Vinaya (Buddhist monastic discipline) is said to have been even greater than that of his teacher, He is recognised, together with the Vinaya master shakyaprabha, as one of the two Jewels or Excellences. Both are renowned for their devotional commitment to upholding and expanding the knowledge of the Vinaya tradition.



This portrait of the 7th century Indian scholar is made in appliqué, where pieces of silk, brocade and other fabric are stitched together. In this example, tiny stitches of horsehair have been used, a technique which is unusual.
