威胜天王，又称战神，敌神，是专门保护其崇拜者免受敌人伤害，并帮助崇拜者增加财富的一类神灵。

《威胜天王经》中说，在世界刚刚建立之后，六道中的阿修罗道和天道起了纷争。阿修罗王和天道之主帝释天驱兵交战，被愤怒和嫉妒迷失心智的阿修罗王开始占了上锋，帝释天连连失败，不能取胜。于是，帝释天请求金刚手菩萨来协同作战。金刚手菩萨化现为九位威胜天王，带领和保护天兵英勇作战，最终战胜了阿修罗王，取得战争的胜利，帝释天重新建立了天道的秩序，天界遂恢复了和平。自此以后，威胜天王威名远播，成为保护大国不受外寇侵扰的最尊胜的大护法。在18世纪的清朝，威胜天王备受清朝皇室的重视，得到非常隆重的供奉，以期消灭偏远疆域的兵乱，维护大国的尊严。
