The inscription reads"Chugyud Genyeng"(Chu rgyud dge bsnyen). This interesting protector is a Dharmapala of local importance. He was a monk from Sera Monastery (a large Gelukpa monastery founded in 1419 on the outskirts of Lhasa) who drowned while crossing a river on a journey to Eastern Tibet. In Kham (Eastern Tibet), a temple was built for his spirit, and it is here that he came to be called Chugyud Genyeng. Later he manifested as a medium and took residence near Sera. He wields a brown cane-stick in his right hand as he turns and looks upward, wildly riding bareback on a dark brown mule through dusky clouds of smoke whose tips are teeming with flames like slithering and coiling orange snakes. In his left hand dangles a crystal rosary.
