The important 7th century Indian scholar, Dharmakirti, sits in the posture of formal debate on a lotus base. He wears beautifully patterned monastic robes and a pandit's hat ; his right hand is positioned near his heart and his left stretched forward in a vigourous gesture, holding a rosary.
Above him are two of his dharma teachers, whilst below are two scholars, one holding a religious text and the other an offering. At the left bottom corner is a disciple gazing at Dharmakirti, listening attentively to the reasoning of the debate. In the background of this nagthang thangka the artist has depicted clouds, a riveq vegetation and a monastery.
Dharmakirti was born into a Brahmin family of Southern India, and was an outstanding scholar and a great contributor to the spread of the dharma across the Indian sub-continent. He belongs to the revered set of six teachers and philosophers known as the Six Ornaments.
