According to the Tibetan inscription on the black section on the left side this is the first page of the 31st chapter of the Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita Sutra: shes rab kyi pha rold tu phyind pa stong phrag brgya pa / dum bu le'u sum cu gcig go //. According to the Tibetan inscription on the black section on the right side this is the 9th dum bu (section) of the 5th bam po (sheet) of the Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita Sutra: shes rab kyi pha rold tu phyind pa stong phrag brgya pa / dum bu rgu pa / bam po lnga pa'o // [Andreas Kretschmar].
This rare, early painted manuscript page of the Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita Sutra illustrates Shakyamuni Buddha clad in a monastic garment and seated in the lotus position. The Buddha displays the "gesture of the wheel of the doctrine" dharmachakra mudra; each thumb and index finger touch to form a circle, symbolizing the Wheel of Dharma. The red painted upper monastic garment with a blue border is rendered with folds and covers the left shoulder only. The Buddha is encircled by a rainbow-colored ornamented aureole, the inner white circle decorated with dotted red lotus flowers. The head is set against a red nimbus with a blue rim. The Buddha is placed within a rectangular red panel with blue border. The Buddha likely represents the historical Shakyamuni shown in the monastic garments of the nirmanakaya aspect.
To the Buddha's right, a blue-skinned disciple kneels on a circular white cushion patterned in red, his hands held in namaskara-mudra as he gazes upward. Clad in a red monastic robe, he is surrounded by a yellow oval aureole traced with red ornament. Note the short inscription partly covered by the painting of the attendant.
Notably, the outer band of the Buddha's aureole decorated with curlicue lines reflects a stylistic feature commonly featured in Western Himalayan painting and compares with an 11th-century mural of Bodhisattva Vajragarbha at Tabo Monastery, (Linrothe (ed.), Collecting Paradise, 2014, p. 120, fig. 2.15).
Bonhams would like to thank Andreas Kretschmar for his assistance in translating portions of this manuscript.
