The thangka depicts the 11th-century yogi-saint Milarepa before the snow-capped slopes of Mount Kailash, revered as the axis mundi and a site of his long meditation retreats. Seated on a green cushion within a verdant, rocky landscape, he cups his right hand to his ear, symbolizing his mastery of song and oral transmission, while his left hand holds a kapala, emblematic of his tantric realization. He wears a white cotton robe and a red yogic band hanging over his right shoulder. At the upper left is his guru, Marpa Chokyi Lodro (1012-1097); at the lower right, his disciple Rechungpa Dorje Drag (1083/4-1161). In the foreground, a recumbent deer, a hunter with a drawn bow, and a light brown dog recall the episode in which Milarepa's compassion transforms the hunter, Gunpo Dorje's, intent, converting him into a disciple. The Alain Bordier Foundation holds a whimsical thangka of Milarepa with the hunter by the Tenth Karmapa, Choying Dorje (Bock, et.al, Buddhist Art of Tibet: In Milarepa's Footsteps, Switzerland, 2002, p. 276).
This painting reflects an Eastern Tibetan style, with a muted palette, open sky, and softly rendered rocks inspired by Chinese landscape painting. Two Eastern Tibetan thangkas in the Rubin Museum, New York (F1997.41.1 and C2002.8.3; HAR 565 & 65082, respectively) share the similar subdued tones and cascading cliffs.
