With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970s
The horizontal format of this thangka follows the wall paintings of Gelug monastic chapels dating back to the 18th century. This format was possibly inspired by the imperial Qing workshop, with examples preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing (Wang [ed.], Zangchuan Fojiao Tangka, 2006, pp. 262-85, nos. 240-63).
Amitayus flanked by White Tara and Ushnishvijaya comprise the three deities associated with long-life in tantric cycles. Above sits Tsongkhapa accompanied by his principal students, Gyaltsab and Khedrub. Located at the bottom register are the protector deities Pehar, Brahmarupa Mahakala, and Tsangpa Karpo.
This composition is similar to a later thangka (HAR 30987) and even more closely to another of the same subject (HAR 30987). Compare with a thangka of Vajrasattva and consort sold at Bonhams, Paris, 1-10 June 2021, lot 65. Also compare with other horizontal-format thangkas sold at Christie's, New York, 12 September 2012, lot 574; Bonhams, London, 12 May 2022, lot 203; and Hong Kong, 5 October 2020, lot 121.
